Bairro Alto & Chiado

Bairro Alto is the most popular of the old-town neighbourhoods of Lisbon. 200 years ago the whole area was a cluster of craft workshops and a tangle of narrow lanes which today give Bairro Alto its special charm. Nowadays the workshops are home to a new generation of designers, artists and craftsmen. The galleries, cafés restaurants and local Fado bars all contribute to Bairro Alto’s vibrant atmosphere. A leisurely stroll northwards leads to the leafy Praça do Principe Real and on to the architecturally splendid Rua Dom Pedro V. An ideal place to relax and enjoy a bit of peace and tranquillity is the Jardim Botânico. About ½ Km east of Bairro Alto lies Chiado, a place that is special to Lisboetas. The poet Fernando Pessoas was a regular at the Café A Brasileira. Armazems do Chiado, a small but busy shopping mall, boutiques, high-class jewellers, traditional local shops and excellent booksellers all present you with not only an opportunity to shop ‘til you drop but to gain an insight as to how this area has kept it’s centuries old charm whilst keeping abreast of modern life. We strongly recommend a visit to our favourite church, São Roque and a to take in the views of the city and Castelo São Jorge from the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara.

Wining & Dining
On Mondays and Wednesdays, A Tasca do Chico is the place for authentic Fado music, the traditional ‘music of the soul’ of Portugal. A Tasca do Chico is refreshingly free of tourist trappings. Café A Brasileira is definitely worth at least one visit. Casa da India is a popular and charming restaurant nearby Chiado square. The Pavilhao Chines (89-91 Rua Dom Pedro V), with its unique décor is one of our favourites and highly recommended.

Transport from the Airport
By taxi the journey takes about 25 mins and should cost around €15 – don’t expect to pay much more. Alternatively take the Aerobus to Praça do Comercio and then take the 28 tram (Prazeres) to the Praça de Camoes. The cost is around €4-5. From the airport you can take the metro until Baixa / Chiado.
