Alvor – the charming fishing village of the Algarve

Alvor is a picturesque coastal village on the western Algarve, nestled between Portimão and Lagos. It combines the authentic charm of a traditional fishing town with the relaxed atmosphere of a modern seaside retreat. Narrow cobblestone streets wind between whitewashed houses, small cafés, and local restaurants where fresh fish is grilled daily. The air carries the scent of salt, sea, and sun warmed stone. At the edge of the village lies the wide lagoon of the Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve – a haven for migratory birds and peaceful walks. Wooden boardwalks lead through the dunes to the golden sands of Praia de Alvor and Praia dos Três Irmãos, two of the Algarve’s most stunning beaches.

Despite its popularity, Alvor has preserved its calm and authentic spirit. Locals gather for morning coffee on the square, seagulls call above the fishing boats, and sunsets turn the sky and sea into shades of gold and rose. Whether for a stroll through the village, dinner by the water, or a long day on the natural beach, Alvor invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and enjoy life in its simple beauty. Alvor has a long history. Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors lived here and appreciated its favorable location by the sea.

Sights and dinning
In Alvor, you can discover the Divino Salvador church, built in 1520, the foundation walls of an 8th-century Moorish castle, the old fish market at the harbor, and a remarkable sea rescue station from the 1930s. There are countless restaurants and cafes in Alvor. Our favorite places are the restaurants with beautiful outdoor seating right by the harbor, opposite the old Lota, the open fish market.

From Faro Airport
Alvor is located on the western Algarve, about 75 km west of Faro Airport. By car, the journey takes around one hour, following the A22 motorway towards Lagos.

From Lisbon Airport
From Lisbon Airport, it’s about 280 km to Alvor. The journey takes you over the Vasco da Gama, Europe's longest bridge, heading south on the A2 and A22, and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. There are also good train and bus connections to Portimão, from where it’s just a short taxi ride to Alvor.
